Cancer Treatment
Dogs and cats get cancer at approximately the same rate as people. Luckily, there are treatment options that can improve quality of life and give you added months to years with your beloved pet that you could lose without treatment.
Chemotherapy is the name given to cancer treatment using cyto-toxic chemical agents. Chemotherapy drugs attack cells in the process of growth and division.
Individual drugs may work through many different mechanisms, such as damaging a cell’s genetic material (DNA) or preventing the cell from dividing.
Chemotherapy may be used as the sole treatment for certain cancers or may be used in combination with other treatment modalities, such as surgery and radiation therapy.
Endoscopic Procedures
High-tech fiber optics permits direct visual examination and biopsies of varying systems. This allows for more accurate, and often minimally invasive, diagnosis and treatment.
Endoscopy can be used in the intestinal tract (oral, esophageal, stomach, colon and even upper intestinal tract), the nasal passages, the ear, the urinary bladder, and the respiratory tract.
Foreign objects can also be removed without the need for surgery.
We are one of the only veterinary practices in the area to offer laparoscopic procedures. We are able to perform laparoscopic spay and gastropexy surgery along with other more specialized minimally invasive procedures.
Internal Medicine
We cover all areas of internal medicine, including: Cardiology; Ophthalmology; Neurology; Dermatology; Gastroenterology; Orthopedic surgery; Oncology; Endocrinology; among others.
New Puppy / Kitten Exams
Adding a new member to your family is an exciting and oftentimes overwhelming experience.
Our knowledgeable team is here to assist you with this big change. A new puppy or kitten exam includes a head to tail physical, a free dose of heartworm and flea medication, as well as a puppy/kitten book with reading material and a complimentary puppy/kitten food sample if applicable.
We are here to answer any questions you may have and look forward to helping you and your new pet get started on your lifelong journey together.
Radiology
Radiology – or X-rays – help our veterinarians evaluate muscular-skeletal, cardiovascular(cardiopulmonary), gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems.
We use a digital radiology system that produces x-ray images within seconds, which provides a far faster and less stressful experience for our patients. We also offer digital dental radiology.
Surgery
We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology.
All patients are carefully screened for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet.
Surgical services and facilities include: fully trained veterinary and technical staff, to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors; intensive after surgery care and full blood testing.
Wellness Care & Immunizations
We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. The time and effort invested in Wellness programs has rewards for both pets and owners.
Our Wellness programs are designed specifically for your pet and include: Comprehensive physical exam, internal parasite testing, heartworm and flea control, vaccinations, spaying and neutering, and specialized blood tests for all life stages.
Every one of our patients has unique needs, and we look forward to discussing the most appropriate health care plan and vaccination schedule for your pet. It is our goal to provide you and your pets the best care and protection possible.
We would like to remind you of the importance of bringing your pets annually for their wellness check up, as it is fundamentally important in the early detection of cardiac and dental disease, cancer, and many other conditions.
A thorough examination and history can provide your veterinarian a window into your pet’s overall health and will allow us to practice the best medicine possible.
Blood Transfusion
We maintain a supply of blood for all types of pets in case of emergency.
The blood is collected from donor pets that live with their owners, and all blood is carefully screened for disease.
Dental Care
Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet’s teeth. We use a modern and safe ultrasonic scaler to clean each tooth thoroughly – above and below the gum line.
Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup.
Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. An astounding 80% of dogs and 70% percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3. Without proper preventive or therapeutic care, plaque and tartar buildup leads to periodontal disease. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause oral pain, dysfunction, and tooth loss.
The inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease may damage other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, or lead to other serious health problems.
The first step in preventing oral disease is a physical examination including a dental exam. We encourage you to call today to discuss your pet’s dental care.
Health Certificate Appointments
Planning a vacation or moving to another state or country? More and more people are including their pets in their travel plans.
Most airlines require a health certificate issued by a certified veterinarian within 10 days of travel.
Please see the Traveling with your Pets page for further information.
At this time we only offer health certificate appointments to established clients and can not accommodate new patient health certificate appointments.
Medical Acupuncture
Medical Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin needles at specific points of the body to interact with nerves and muscles.
This can be helpful in managing pain and inflammation. It is also used to compliment the treatment of nerve injury and many chronic health conditions.
Nutritional Counseling
Some pets require special food, and all pets benefit from a balanced diet.
Our trained and certified staff is available to help you choose the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active
Rehabilitation & Fitness
Needham Animal proudly houses the Wilmington Animal Fitness and Rehabilitation Center.
The center is one of the only animal rehabilitation facilities in Southeast NC and is an integral part of the Needham Animal Hospital healthcare team. Physical therapy and rehabilitation are a new specialty on the forefront of cutting edge advances in veterinary medicine.
Treatment involves a patient specific regimen of modalities and exercises such as agility and gait re-education, balance and proprioception training, use of heat and cold, use of therapeutic laser, and use of prosthetics/orthotics or assistive devices such as carts.
Animal rehabilitation transforms the way dogs and cats recover from surgery, injury, and other debilitating diseases.
Ultrasound
This non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology uses sound waves to painlessly examine specific internal organs, primarily the heart and abdominal organs. Pregnancy exams are also available.
